The RAN recently supported a project which has been set up to locate the Australian submarine HMAS AE1 and discover the cause of her disappearance in 1914 off Rabaul, New Britain. The attached survey report from Commander John Foster RAN Rtd to the Chief of Navy gives some insight into the successes and challenges of this project. Although not a formal part of the SIA, this project is of keen interest to us.
