COUNTDOWN TO MAJOR SUBMARINE CONFERENCE
Workforce development and the transition from the Collins-class submarines to the future submarines will be major themes at Asia-Pacific’s leading forum on submarines – the 4th Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference (SubSTEC4) – which takes place in less than three weeks.
SubSTEC4, which is convened by the Submarine Institute of Australia (SIA), will feature a number of high-profile speakers, including:
- Hon Christopher Pyne MP, Minister for Defence Industry;
- Hon Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia;
- Vice Admiral Tim Barrett AO, CSC, RAN, Chief of Navy;
- Rear Admiral Stephen Johnson USN (rtd), General Manager Submarines, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, Department of Defence;
- Rear Admiral Greg Sammut AM, CSC, RAN, Head, Future Submarine Program, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, Department of Defence;
- Mr Gerard Autret, Chief Technical Officer, Naval Group Australia; and
- Mr Vince Di Pietro, Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin Australia/New Zealand.
“The theme of this year’s conference, ‘The Australian Submarine Capability – Consolidating Emerging Technologies and Developing the Submarine Workforce’, points to SubSTEC4 being the SIA’s most successful technical conference to date,” said SIA Executive Director, David Nicholls. “The importance of maintaining a sovereign submarine capability will be emphasised in many presentations, while this year’s conference will also include an event which offers encouragement to students who could go on to become submariners and engineers working on manufacturing and/or sustaining submarines.”
The conference will be preceded by visits to defence industry and academic research facilities in the greater Adelaide area. To view the full conference program, including how to register, visit http://www.submarineinstitute.com/sia-conferences/.
