9th November 2015
The final public pitch by the three bidders to build the Australian navy’s future submarines will take place at a major conference in Adelaide in less than a fortnight.
Senior executives from Japan, Germany’s ThyssenKrupp and France’s DCNS will provide presentations at the 2015 Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering Conference on 17 November.
“It’s well known that the competitive evaluation process, which is being undertaken to determine who builds Australia’s next fleet of submarines, will inform the largest defence procurement program in Australia’s history. The Future Submarine Program (SEA1000) represents an investment in the order of $50 billion,” said David Nicholls, Executive Director of the Submarine Institute of Australia, organiser of the conference.
“The upcoming conference is set to be the last major opportunity for the three proponents under the Future Submarine Program to publicly present ahead of the deadline to submit bids of 30 November. Anyone who has a direct or indirect interest in the submarine competitive evaluation process is urged to attend the conference.”
Speakers on behalf of each bid will be:
- Japan: Mr Masaki Ishikawa – Assistant Commissioner, ATLA; RADM Naoto Sato – Director General, Maritime Project Coordination, Project Management Department, ATLA; Mr Noboru Flores – Vice President and Executive Advisor, Integrated Defense and Space Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
- Germany: Dr John White – Chairman, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Australia; Mr Dieter Rottsieper – Vice Chairman, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems GmbH
- France: Mr Herve Guillou – Chairman and Chief Executive, DCNS group
Also presenting at the conference will be one of the Australian Government’s key officials in the procurement process, RADM Greg Sammut CSC, RAN, who is Head, Future Submarine Program, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group within the Department of Defence. Other confirmed speakers at the conference include Australia’s Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Hon Christopher Pyne MP, the Premier of South Australia, Hon Jay Weatherill MP, and a number of other national and international submarine experts.
“Given the event is being held so close to the deadline for bids to build Australia’s future submarines, this year’s conference promises to be our biggest and most informative to date,” Mr Nicholls said.
