Major Funding for New National Submarine Museum

Planning for Australia’s first national submarine museum has received a major boost thanks to a significant grant from the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The funding, secured through the Maritime Museum’s Project Support Scheme and awarded to groups involved in the collection, conservation, and display of objects of historical national maritime significance, will allow the Submarine Institute of Australia (SIA) to push ahead with work to establish an Australian National Submarine Museum.

The SIA will use the funds to assist in the development of an innovative “virtual” museum with links to physical displays in Australia and around the world.

Once completed, the Australian National Submarine Museum will be a globally significant educational and scientific museum that:

  • will host exhibitions and collections to preserve the knowledge of the past and to share this history with visitors of all ages.
  • will highlight current submarine activities in an interactive and engaging way to stimulate learning.
  • will look forward to consider Australia’s future submarine capability and its role in keeping the world safe.

Importantly, it will also be the centre point for academic research and will include witness accounts, personal stories, photos, and reflections from the nation’s submarine community.
